Breast MRI Computer-Aided Detection

Digital Mammography with Computer-Aided Detection

At NDIC, digital mammography has replaced old film technology – providing quicker, clearer and more reliable information and faster more comfortable exams, too. Even more, the system uses Computer-Aided Detection, technology that highlights any abnormalities it detects, and alerts the radiology physician to focus on these areas. As a result, 23.4 % more cancers can be detected earlier, at a more treatable stage.

Computer-aided detection harnesses the power of computers to allow for increased sensitivity in interpreting the results of a mammogram. It works by scanning mammogram film that has been digitized, then applying special algorithms that search for abnormal findings. The system marks any potential abnormalities it detects, either with an asterisk for a potential mass or a triangle to designate a potential calcification. These markings alert the radiology physician who is reading the film to focus on these areas to determine if they require further workup.

How do I prepare for a mammogram?
When you arrive for you to have your mammogram, it is preferable that you dress in a two-piece outfit, since you will be asked to remove all clothing from the waist up.  Do not use any lotions, powders, perfumes, or deodorant in the breast or underarm area the day of your test (particles from the chemicals can distort the images). If you are still of reproductive years, try to avoid scheduling your exam the week before your period, as your breasts will be tender. If possible, obtain prior mammograms and make them available to the technologist at the time of your visit or before. The use of comparison to prior images is very valuable.

What can I expect during my visit?
Upon arrival you will be asked to complete a questionnaire. Prior history is very important in mammography and can be a very valuable tool to the Radiologist. The technologist will explain the procedure to you; convey any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist at this time. You will be taken into an exam room after you have removed your clothing and your breast placed on an imaging plate. You will then feel pressure as compression is applied to the breast.  This compression is needed to evaluate the tissue in your breast. The actual imaging will take only a few minutes. Your images will be reviewed by one of our highly trained and respected Radiologist, and results sent to your physician. NDIC takes great effort to provide for both your comfort and privacy.
