Diagnostic Radiology

What is an X-Ray?
X-ray, is one of the oldest, yet most frequently used forms of medical imaging. Discovered in 1895 by a German Physicist, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, x-rays have been used to produce images of the body by using many different techniques over the years, the newest being digital acquisition. While the physics of x-rays have not changed, how we acquire them and view them has. Digital x-ray exams take less time, require a lower dose of radiation to the patient, and can be viewed simultaneously at multiple locations. At NDIC we are proud to be a fully digital imaging facility, giving you the best in today’s technology.

Common uses of X-Ray
X-rays are used in medical imaging to visualize most of the body. It is a valuable tool in diagnosing and monitoring many diseases such as arthritis, degenerative diseases of the spine, pneumonia, bronchitis and even cancer. While most people think of x-rays being used to see a broken bone, there are many more uses. Fluoroscopy a type of x-ray can used to visualize the digestive tract and even the internal parts of a joint. With the use of a variety of techniques NDIC uses x-rays to help your Doctor properly diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases.

Preparation
There usually is not any preparation needed for most x-ray exams. You may be asked to change out of your clothing and put on a gown before your exam. Metal and hard plastic objects affect imaging, so on the day of you exam, avoid clothing with zippers, buttons and snaps if possible. It may also be a good idea to leave your jewelry at home; a necklace, earrings, bracelet, or ring may need to be removed. Women of child bearing age should always inform their doctor and/or the technologist if there is any possibility that they may be pregnant.

Patient Comfort
X-ray exams themselves are completely painless. Some mild discomfort may result from lying on the x-ray exam table. There are times that in order to get a clear image of an injured area you may be asked to hold a position that is uncomfortable, but this should only be for a very brief time while the x-ray is taken. Any movement during the exposure of the x-ray will cause the image to look blurry and may make it necessary to repeat the procedure.
