(239) COMPUTER-AIDED DETECTION COMES TO NDIC Computer-aided detection harnesses the power of computers to allow for increased sensitivity in interpreting the results of a mammogram. It works by scanning mammogram film that has been digitized, then applying special algorithms that search for abnormal findings. The system marks any potential abnormalities it detects, either with an asterisk for a potential mass or a triangle to designate a potential calcification. These markings alert the radiology physician who is reading the film to focus on these areas to determine if they require further workup. "The combination of the computer's sensitivity and the radiologist's experience is powerful," says Dr. Robert Meli of Naples Radiologists, P.A., the physician group that serves both NDIC and the NCH Healthcare System. "We know we can reduce mortality from breast cancer by 63% among women who are getting an annual mammogram. With 'CAD' technology, we will be able to have even greater success." Peer-reviewed scientific studies show that up to 23.4% of breast cancer could be detected at an earlier, more treatable stage with "CAD" programs. NDIC chose the ImageChecker M1000 from R2 Technology, Inc. as its Computer-Aided Detection equipment for mammography. Naples Diagnostic Imaging Centers, Naples' first medical diagnostic facility, offers Open and High Field MRI, Diagnostic Radiology, Spiral CT, Mammography, Positron Emission Tomography (P.E.T.), Osteoporosis Evaluation, Ultrasound, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Nuclear Medicine and Non-invasive Vascular Testing. Its physicians, all associated with Naples Radiologists, P.A., are the only in their field to have privileges at Naples Community and North Collier Hospitals. Four locations - North Naples, Central Naples, East Naples and Marco Island - are available to serve patients, and scheduling can be arranged by calling 435-7777.### Additional information: www.r2tech.com Home / Physicians / Facilities / Services / |
