NDIC LAUNCHES DIGITAL BREAST CANCER IMAGING
NAPLES, FL., February 9, 2006 - In another technological first for Southwest Florida, Naples Diagnostic Imaging Centers (NDIC) has introduced Digital Mammography with Computer Aided Detection at its Plaza, North and East offices. The system, called GE Senographe 2000D full-field digital mammography, is helping physicians to detect and diagnose breast cancer earlier and more accurately.

"This new system revolutionizes breast care," comments Dr. Robert Meli of Naples Radiologists, the medical group that serves NDIC as well as the NCH downtown and north campuses. "Not only do patients receive faster and easier exams, but referring physicians receive more accurate images for diagnosis."

In 2003, breast cancer struck more than 200,000 times, and claimed more than 40,000 lives, according to the American Cancer Society. Early detection and proper treatment are keys to survival.

"The Senographe system allows us to provide the most advanced care for our patients," continues Dr. Meli. "Among its many advantages is the ease of reading, especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with all breast tissue types. Also, the digital mammogram takes as little as half the time of a film mammogram, and eliminates the wait for film to be developed to assure that images are usable."

As a further asset, NDIC's systems are equipped with computer-aided detection (CAD) software, which acts as a "second pair of eyes" for the physician reading the mammogram. Similar to a spellchecker on a personal computer, CAD can detect findings that might otherwise be overlooked, thus increasing cancer detection.

Now celebrating its twentieth year, NDIC was Naples' first medical diagnostic facility. Its diagnostic offerings include the area's only Integrated Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Computed Tomography (CT); 64-detector CT; and Breast MRI. Open and High Field MRI, Diagnostic Radiology, Osteoporosis Evaluation, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Cardiac and Cancer Screening, and Non-invasive Vascular Testing are also available. Its physicians are the only in their field to have privileges at Naples Community and North Collier Hospitals. Scheduling can be arranged by calling 435-7777.
